London Road, Shardlow, Derbyshire

Consent had been granted for the change of use of a triangular parcel of pasture measuring 0.9ha to a residential caravan site for six gypsy families, including the erection of two amenity buildings and access improvement.

The site was situated to the west of London Road near Shardlow and immediately to the east of the road are cropmarks relating to the scheduled Aston Cursus and Iron Age settlement. Features within the scheduled monument include barrows, ring ditches, a probably henge monument and prehistoric field system. However, a geophysical survey submitted with the application had shown there to be no anomalies of archaeological origin although there was a condition to the consent to undertake a programme of archaeological evaluation.

Lanpro Archaeology and Heritage was commissioned to consult with the archaeological officer for Derbyshire County Council regarding the requirements and negotiate a trench plan. Lanpro Archaeology and Heritage prepared the written scheme of investigation, tendered the archaeological work on behalf of the client and managed the fieldwork and post-excavation through to discharge of the condition. No archaeological finds or features were discovered, and the programme of work was wrapped up quickly and efficiently.
