Other than some relict medieval ridge and furrow earthworks no significant archaeological remains were known within the site, although evidence from the wider area suggested some limited potential for the presence of Bronze Age archaeology within the site. Therefore, the first stage of works was to undertake a targeted trial trench evaluation of the site. That evaluation identified a three cremation burials located upon a low spur within the centre of the site. These finds necessitated a small open area excavation to be undertaken.
The open area excavation revealed a ring ditch (remnants of a ploughed out round barrow) enclosing a 22 m diameter area that contained seven cremation burials (two within pottery cremation urns and five unurned, spread across six graves) and a deposit of cremation-related debris. One of the cremation graves contained a complete inverted Early Bronze Age Collared Urn. Subsequent CT scan and excavation of the Urn revealed that it contained the remains of two individuals who’s remains appeared to have been placed within the urn in two separate bags.
The written scheme of investigation was produced by Lanpro Archaeology and Heritage who also tendered the works and managed the archaeological contractor on site ensuring all work was completed to time and budget.
