An initial phase of evaluation trenching was undertaken to determine the site’s archaeological potential. This identified an area of possible early prehistoric activity but also demonstrated that the majority of the site did not contain any significant archaeological remains. The trenching allowed most of the site to be ‘signed-off’ by the council ready for development, while a small open-area excavation was carried out to record any prehistoric remains.
The approach agreed with the council allowed development works to proceed rapidly, while providing a targeted and reasonable scope of archaeological excavation to allow a full record to be made of the site’s archaeological features.
