Through collaborative design we have developed a design that successfully responds to the many statutory constraints and the client’s brief.
The long vacant constrained riverside site presented many challenges, requiring an innovative and considered design response. The concept centres around ‘L’ shaped accommodation block that faces the river, enclosing a south facing landscaping, providing both public and private amenity space.
The building defines a key corner of the river along Duke Street and positively engages with the street level; filling the current void within the urban fabric. The southern corners of the building are expressed in curved brickwork and glazing, creating a visual reference back to the nearby historic Norwich University of Arts building, that also fronts the river a few hundred yards downstream. Expressed brickwork, contrasting materials and detailing provide structure and scale to the elevations.
When complete the site will provide a new link between Duke Street, the river and the existing major east west pedestrian and cycle route, aiding the further connectivity of the existing Riverside Walk.
