Beehive Mills, Bolton, Greater Manchester

Lanpro Archaeology and Heritage were commissioned to manage a programme of additional historic building recording to inform Listed Building Consent for the demolition of the Grade II Listed Beehive Mills, Bolton, Greater Manchester, as well as organise and manage an archaeological excavation on the site.

The building recording included the production of external elevation drawings, plans and detailed drawings of architectural and structural elements, to mitigate their loss. A structural watching brief was subsequently undertaken during the demolition phase to identify previous obscured features. Following demolition, archaeological excavation was undertaken of the two former boiler and engine houses that originally powered the mill.

The ongoing demolition on the site, and the significant associated health and safety constraints, required close collaboration between Lanpro, the client and the demolition contractors. This allowed for the agreement of a staged approach to the archaeological excavation which provided an appropriate level of archaeological recording on the site, required by Greater Manchester Archaeology Advisory Service, but also, significantly, no delay in the demolition and clearance programme, allowing development works to proceed without interruption.
