Aldwych House, Bethel Street, Norwich

Lanpro obtained prior approval through Class J (now known as Class O) of the General Permitted Development Order 2015 to change the use of a former office building into 48 residential flats.

The client wanted to maximise the use of the roof space which required the existing roof to be raised and they also needed to make external changes to the building which go beyond the scope of the prior approval process. Lanpro submitted a full planning application for a roof extension to accommodate 4 additional flats and external changes to improve the visual appearance of the building and insert additional windows. This separate permission allowed the client to deliver a higher quality scheme with a better overall design.

The roof extension and raising of the roof required careful consideration due to the buildings location in the City Centre conservation area and adjacent to a Grade II listed building.
